Drawing Acts
Following the Massachusetts Drawing Act of 1870, surrounding states implement their own version of the law. Between 1871 and 1876, Maine, New York, and Vermont enact laws concerning the instruction of drawing in public schools.
Report of the Committee of Ten
In 1892, the National Education Association appoints a group of ten educators to determine what the high school curriculum should include. The committee questions the role of education and ultimately concludes that high school classes should prepare young men and women for the real world. The arts received very little attention. Three years later, the committee publishes their recommendations in a report.
