PHILOSOPHERS

John Locke:
Philosopher John Locke is known for his writings on many subjects including economics, religion, science, education, and politics. One of Locke’s later essays, Some Thoughts Concerning Education, not only outlines his views on what he thought to be an unsatisfactory educational system, but also includes support for the layman’s education in the visual arts. According to Locke, the everyday gentleman should have the ability to draw readily at hand, but need not be thoroughly schooled in the subject, as its study would keep a gentleman from learning more important knowledge and skills. Locke was born in Wrington, UK and was educated first at the Westminster school, followed by the Christ Church, Oxford. Here, he found himself dissatisfied early in life with Aristotelian teaching methods (Uzgalis, 2001).
