EVENTS & MOVEMENTS

Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi
Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, of Prussia, is a leading educational reformer of the early nineteenth century. Pestalozzi’s pedagogy reflects the 18th century Enlightenment philosophy, which views the power of reason as the means to improve lives. Common school drawing, introduced at Pestalozzi’s institute, is an important component to his pedagogy. His drawing methods are published in 1803 in the text, A B C der Anschauung, which is subsequently enormously influential on drawing instruction in the United States.

Charles Wilson Peale (1741-1827)
One of America's earliest artists, Charles Wilson Peale is best known for his portraits of significant historical figures including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. However, Peale is a driving force in the establishment of museums in America. In 1786, he creates the Philadelphia Museum, now known as the Peale Museum, and in 1805, he helps to establish the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
